The right target. The closest thing on this list to the right idea. Where it falls down is delivery: probiotics are live organisms, so much of what you paid for has to survive stomach acid first, and a single strain bets everything on one organism colonising a gut that may not welcome it.
And the dose is a guess. These are almost never dosed by size. A flat scoop means small dogs are overdosed and large dogs underdosed, and neither owner can tell which. There are no calming actives either, so nothing supports the dog while the gut work happens.

The last resort. CBD is what owners try when they have run out of ideas, and plenty report a real short-term effect around fireworks and storms.

You have already bought this one. Almost certainly one of the four calming chews already in your cupboard, and the reason so many owners have written the whole category off. The first problem is the proprietary blend: a label listing thirteen ingredients without telling you how much of each is designed so you cannot check the dose. The marquee ingredients sit in amounts too small to do much, and the bulk is flavouring and binder.
Wrong target. Melatonin is a sleep signal, not a threshold change. It can take the edge off one evening. It does not touch what happens when a cyclist comes around a corner. Dosing is a flat count for all sizes, and returns run through the marketplace rather than the brand.

The gentle first suggestion. Usually the first thing recommended, by a vet who does not want to reach for medication yet. For a nervous puppy settling into a new home, a sensible starting point.
